Second visit...with 'Nanas'

This second visiting made me feel so long tidal. At the first time, we decided to visit 'Home for old aged/handicapped' once in a month(on the last saturday of a month). Before goind there, I was really looking forward to meeting them, talking with them. I was missing them...

When we reached there, firstly, I and my colleagues had to divide two groups. One group is for shelter of men, the other one is for  women. In fact, women(grandmothers) are more comfortable for me. Of course, on the base, there is the think we have same gender. Moreover, I have some experiences with many grandmothers. When I had lived in Korea, I used to visit an old people's home or handicapped people's with my family. My mother is very interested in welfare of the aged. So, she was studying that field and various volunteer activities in that field. I think the works with my family were effect on my thinking and value. I always thank for having that background and doing that kind of work from childhood. This time, however, I wanted to make another experience. Futhermore, we didn't come there to do comfortable volunteers. I decided to go to the shelter of men(grandfathers' home). While going that side, I tried to focus on positive factors. I thought I could do well with women because we would have similar experiences, share our hobbies/common things easily. But, when I was in Korea, I used to talk with my grandfather. I knew which topic he would like and what I have to do for him. Especially, he could be a my great teacher, leader, and supporter. He is experienced person. As an elder, he could give me so many things for my life as well as his.

While entering there, I and my friends(Chinmay and Kaustabh) was discussing 'what could we ask?'. Before reaching there, I was thinking about it. But, I couldn't remember it at that time and get confidence I could ask this kind of question or not. I don't know Hindi and Marithi. So, I could only be helped by my friends or sir. I couldn't but face a difficulty of language in communication. I tried to talk with them by asking and practicing short sectences in Hindi. In the meantime, we found one man who could speak English. He speaks English very well. He told me English is his first language. I could communicate with him. At first, I felt tension a little and worrying-I could ask this kind of question or not. When I was hesitating, he told me. "You can speak and ask anything for me. If you don't speak, your tongue will be hard." He is an elder as well as teacher for me! I could be more confident and tried to ask and talk with him. I let him hear about my motherland, Korea. "There are four seasons-Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter....." After sometime, when I was saying about me, he started telling me about his story. He has one son in Nagpur. His son has one daughter. When he lived with his family i.e. before dying of his wife, he used to teach his grand-daughter and play with her. Nowadays, he told he drops in his son from time to time. He doesn't go frequently, but, because he is familiar with staying here and as for the others who are with him. During having a talk, he wiped his eyes continuously. He told his eyes water. Also, he gave me so many eoncourages. I don't know how they feel as talking with me. But, I could be sure. As talking with them and hearing them, I could open my mind and have confidence before that time. We left some stories for next time by saying 'See you next month...'

I heard one thing from TV programme-'There are no people who have unbroken mind. But, for living, because we have to live. Therefore, we could smile, therefore, we could thank, therefore, we look like feeling happy...' The attitude knowing how to take care of the little one or thanking for given circumstances gives me a brave, surmountable mind in any hard circumstances, situations though I feel it is difficult. When I went there at the first time, I heard their story from sister. They are so poor, suffered from poverty, thrown by their own parents...already marginalized people out of society. They all are the global issues which we have to face it but most of the people wouldn't want to consider it. Almost people but not all usually overlook that facts as if they are not irrelevant at all. But, that is a big mistake of mistakes. As mentioned earlier, we are the people who are living in the world. We should face many global issues and think about them earnestly.

Next time, I would take instrument to play some songs for them. Deepshri ma'am suggested us to think game or small activities which all could be involved in. And, I promised to show some pictures of Korea. I'm sure they will be pleased with them. I could felt their happiness could be mine while talking with them.

Creative activity-Drawing Competition

Between 10:00 am to 11:30 am, in my school, Drawing Competition was held with being organized by Bharti AXA life insurance company Itd. The topic of today is like this.

Topics for competition:

Group A- Pre-Primary : Color the given picture

Group B- Grades 1 to 5 : Dussehra Festival

Group C- Grades 6 to 8 : Mother Nature

Group D- Grades 9 to 12 : Common Wealth Games

I was in Group D. When I saw my topic before, I didn't know CWG(Common Wealth Games). I had to find what it is.

The Commonwealth Games is an international, multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. As well as many Olympic sports, the Games also include some sports that are played mainly in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn bowls, rugby sevens and netball. The Games are overseen by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), which also controls the sporting programme and selects the host cities. The host city is selected from across the Commonwealth, with eighteen cities in seven countries having hosted it. The event was first held in 1930 under the title of the British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The event was renamed as the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954, the British Commonwealth Games in 1970, and gained its current title in 1978. Only six teams have attended every Commonwealth Games: Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. Australia has been the highest achieving team for eleven games, England for seven and Canada for one. (From Wikipedia)

All students were participated in the competition. We came to multi-purpose room. Each students drew hard on stating own theme with paint, color pens, crayon, etc. I really like drawing with water color. So, I used it when I was drawing. According to the topic, I thought what I could draw. Then, I chose to draw Boxing game which is one of the games in CWG. I tried to describe it dynamically.

I always believe drawing/painting helps us express our mind. That is the one reason I want to learn Art. When we express our mind/thinking, we could help us introspect. I think it's very important thing in life-self reflection.

Gardening in the backyard

Today, in the CAS period, I and whole CAS members did gardening. Oh, my first remained feeling is tiredness. After finishing the work, I was fully exhausted in the next two periods.
It started from 1:40pm. Firstly, some of us carried out the humiditied and good soil like manure, others dug up the dried soil around the plants. It seemed to be cited drought. Most of the soil cracked from a dry, hot weather. So, after digging, we covered there with new humiditied, good soil and watered. The new soil would help the plants absorb water well against hot, dry weather. There are some dying plants because of not enough water or no upholder. We tried to make them live again. We supported them with soil and water. I really don't want them to die. As we have a responsibility for caring them, we have to worry them against a blazing sun!
It was a only one period so we couldn't take care of the whole plants. But, we did our best to give live to each plants. Also, it was so nice work though it was so tired. All were wet with perspiration, however, I hope us to feel full. There is our efforts and beads of sweat to make them live. Right now, the hardness could seem to feel big. But, after some time, we could find wonderful achievement/results bigger than the small hardness.

Prepared vs. Unprepared

YAHO! I studied today, I taught today. So I enjoyed and was happy.
Today, my student, Murnal got well so we could study together. I could find myself-I really was waiting that time to study together... But, I was sorry to Murnal. I reached there a little late because of problem of my driver. We have to go to the Ashram by 12:00. But, he came to pick I and Hyunju at 12:00! So, when I reached there  at 12:15, I could find my missed student waiting for us. Also, I woke up so late today and I was feeling dull. I was worrying I could teach well or not at that time. However, after some time, I could feel my senses were becoming fresh and awakening. It was so exciting and nice. I led the study well and could encourage him to solve the problems because I like teaching and studying with him. Studying with him doesn't seem to study. It seems to make me feel sharing/dividing part of ours each other. Those feelings make me excited in teaching and encourage me to say more.

The topic of today was converting the unit. Firstly, we remind the basic unit and changing it of ourselves.

1 km = 1000 m                   1 t = 1000 kg                          1 L = 1000 ml
1 m   = 100 cm                   1 kg = 100 g                            (L = decimeter cube)

1 cm = 10 mm                    1 g = 10 mg

Whenver we face the finishing time, I feel something wanting-'ah...I want, a little more.' But, soon, I and Murnal don't mind it because we know we have next time!

Another Touch*

The new touch is so fresh. Also, for me, it most welcomes! It could not mean only new trying also try again.  Today, I touched another paper but same water colour.
Every time, I and my friends use same materials. But, we get different pieces and effects. That's the another attraction in whatever we do. The title of my piece of today is 'Geese in the Park'. I chose and I drew. First trying seems to make me feeling difficult. But, I could always take some skills and knowledges by learning this. Yet, it is not only for me also for others because I'm learning how to benefit for others even in every activities! So, I could use these for others and make effects which might be given to them. Furthermore, I would like to learn carefully and distinctly.

For my saplings!!!!!

Today, I and my colleagues took care of saplings. As there was no rain during some days, we decided to go to water them incharging of CAS coordinator Chiranjeet sir and supervisor Jackson sir. From 1:40 pm, we wetered enough to them. I was really sorry for some saplings because some of them were already dry... Concurrently, I felt how I did remain them with indifferent attitude.

First of all, we dug dried mud around the saplings for water going into the soil well.. From main building of school to enterance, supplying water was a little difficult. But, we did(showed) another ability-Cooperation. We passed the water plastic bucket as relay. One stands there, other stands there, I stand here... and we carried it after another. During watering, we could see it again. When we helped each other, we could do easier and faster! Chiranjeet sir said, "See. How important the cooperation is! It helps you work more comfortable and faster. Also, It is good for you each other." Exactly, it is necessary to do any work with others.
From now on, I have to take care of them because they are just little children who need my care. Clearly, I have a responsibility of doing it!

Opportunity...

Today, I was disappionted little bit.
I had prepared work sheets and had some plans with Mrunal. But, suddenly, there were factors which made me not to be able to do my work, teaching. I couldn't teach my student, Mrunal. He was sick. So, I gave my work sheets to his brother and got worried cordially. Have you ever felt how teachers feel and take care of their students? As soon as I heard that Mrunal was sick I could feel real worried and hope to him become well(of course, I felt disappointed because I was waiting for that time and prepared course contents). It makes me recall one of my experiences. When I was not well and I had to stay at home, most of teachers asked my safety. They hoped me to be well as soon as possible. As recalling it, I thought 'Ah...teachers felt like this...!'

So, I taught English to another student. He was practicing reading and I let him know correct pronenciation when he read wrong. In fact, he is a student of Trisha, one of my friends. As she reaching, I and she taught science together along English. She let me know how to teach science. I could get another skill in teaching. When I teach the science, there must be some steps.

1. Before starting the main concept, pulling him(the student) to think about the concept in real life.
2. Ask him, ask him, ask him

-Could you tell me some example of it?
-Which are there(give me some examples..)?
-How this reaction could be occured? and Why?

3. Let's practice and apply it! (together and let him do himself)

I was really happy to get another feeling and skills though I couldn't teach my student. But, I think all children are my students. They are not different. Good learner as well as good teachers! So I say, ALWAYS THANK YOU:)

The First Experience, First Debate-the 1st time

This is why we can say that, in science, we often learn from our mistakes, and why we can speak clearly and sensibly about making progress there. -Karl Popper

"Good afternoon, my honourable judgers, teachers, and my friends. The motion before us today is 'Should grade system be abolished?' YES. I fully support that. I strongly believe marks are better than grades in assessment of student....First of all,"  This was the beginning of today, my debate.

Last September 17, Friday,DYPIS decided to have Inter House English Debate-Sapphire vs. Ruby. My house, Sapphire, contactor Chiranjeet sir as well as CAS coordinator and Pruvaa ma'am suggested us to apply. "Everyone could apply and it would be good experience and opportunity for you. You could have confidence with standing in front of publics and it could help you grow your speech ability also. As much as possible, volunteer and try! Of course, there would be a next chance. But, when you get the chance, just catch it, show your efforts, and make you better." So, I volunteered and wanted to catch it. Even, before having a debate, there was a one more small competition. In the debate, there has to be only 3 participants but, in my house, Sapphire, there were 4 volunteers finally. For sorting out the 3 participants, we had a pre-competition. At that time, I kept peace of mind though I wanted to be a participants. I don't know well why I thought like that. Actually, at that time, I was expecting nothing. But, I was selected. I really was surprised, thanked and I knew I have to improve more and more in my arguments. So, my next part would be started... When I was selected by Chiranjeet sir and Viji ma'am, they suggested some additions and advised me how to prepare. As I accepted their advice and cheers, I added some more, practiced many times, and was checked by others. There was no end of practicing it.

This work was a little tough for me. It was my first debate!!!!! Practice, practice, practice, but still it was insufficient and fingding the informations to support my opinion would be another practice of preparation. Although there were those insufficient factors, it was amazing and I could feel I am walking to approve another site. About debate, one site says, Debate is a great confidence builder for young people (and older) to be involved in. If you can hold your own on a team, you can be confident in most settings. A Debate Speech is different from any other type of speech because you are not just giving information. In a Debate Speech you are defending an idea. You know that an opponent is also preparing a speech that is going to be designed to make you speech look bad!

There were 6 participants(Ruby(3)-Jerry(DP 2), Nishad(DP 2), (grade 8) and Sapphire(3)-Trisha(DP 2), Dasom(DP 1,me), Mukul(DP 2)) and judgers(Chloe ma'am and Di ma'am) and Chiranjeet sir hosted the debate and Muktanan sir let us know the time limits. Each participant was given 4 minutes and there was retort part, in that, was given 2 minutes. I was a little scared. Actually, I really like catching the MIC. This time, I didn't want to have frightening, however, the language and the first made me feel hasitated only the 3words! Other participants have really nice attitude, positions and they would be good speakers. They seem like being confidence and asserting very well in my sight. Especially, my knowledgable opponent, Nishad as well as the winner of debate was wonderful. I was impressed and stimulated by him. After finishing the debate, I and my friends were talking about the positions and attitude on the way to home. We all thought we must practice and try to have the confidence much more!

This is just the first step to advance to forward. Next time, I will be able to take another opportunity. Also, I'm sure I would be participated in it again and again. As I know, the more practices and mistakes make, the better results would occur. All the time, I enjoyed and every parts made me think What would I do. I really thank once more for all the teachers and my friends who has encouraged and cheered me.
